MDF or Real Wood

Baseboards are used primarily for one thing, which is to protect the lower edge of your floors from scratches and scuff marks caused by vacuum cleaners and footwear. So it usually makes sense to paint or even stain your baseboards. For a long time, people painted their baseboards differently from the walls above it and then a trend started where baseboards were painted the same colors as the rest of the walls immediately above it for consistency and to make the ceilings seem higher.

Most baseboards these days are painted. And some designers will even recommend that these be painted the same color as their clients’ walls For more traditional or classic interiors, I will use a semi-gloss finish on my baseboards but will recommend an eggshell finish for a more contemporary interior on the other hand – it’s just a matter of preference.

So for this purpose, I’ll choose a paint-ready MDF type of baseboard over real wood, as these types of baseboards are less expensive and don’t require staining. It’s also a lot easier to paint (and repaint) over MDF than to change a stain color, which usually involves stripping down and sanding the surface before you can apply a new coat of stain.
